Denis Cooverman didn't want to give a typical graduation speech, cherishing memories and embracing challenges and crap. So, instead, he stood up in front of his 512 class-mates and their 3,000 relatives and said some-thing really important:
'I love you, Beth Cooper.'
It would have been such a sweet, romantic moment. Except that:

The reason I don't read 'thrillers' or 'action' books is that I don't see them as being much different from their movie form. I don't feel like I get anything more out of the book than a movie version, and I'd rather save myself some hours and just watch a movie if that is the kind of entertainment I want.
This book falls into a newly created category derived from the above. If I want to see a whacky teen comedy, I'll watch the movie instead of reading the book. The book is pretty self-aware tha...more

It started off promising... really, it did. I'll admit it, I was a nerd in high school, so I can relate to Denis Cooverman a little bit. He uses his time at the podium during his high school graduation ceremony (valedictorian, of course) to criticize some of his classmates before professing his love for popular girl Beth Cooper.

I am ashamed to admit that I suggested that my book club read this book as 'a fun, summer read,' since we seemed to be reading a lot of depressing books lately. When I read this book, I had no idea that the author, first-time novelist Larry Doyle, was an established television writer, with writing credits for 'Daria,' 'Beavis and Butthead,' and 'The Simpsons,' but I easily could have guessed. I Love You, Beth Cooper has the frantic pace and zany, unrealistic plot points that are necessary to keeping a television audience (especially the youthful ones of the aforementioned shows) interested for the whole half-hour. It is full to bursting with cliches of...more

During his speech as high school valedictorian, Denis Coverman strays from his agreed upon script, taking a moment to get some things off his chest and call out certain members of the student body who have made his life miserable for the past four years. And he also takes a moment to let his secret crush, Beth Cooper, popular cheerleader, know that he loves her.

This book is all about making you laugh. The story is shallow, as are most of the characters.
While there were probably more moments in this that made me laugh aloud than any book since Hitchhikers Guide, it completely lacked any of the emotional or philosophical satisfaction Hitchhikers brought.
And, in an odd way, it's almost too funny. It's like the author kept going back and trying to make sure every single sentence had a joke in it. In that sense, although there are plenty of extremely funny...more

I wanted to read this book before seeing the movie and I'm glad I did (not because I've seen the movie yet and am making comparisons, but because I can't imagine the movie can translate half the humor of this book).

Stopped reading this when I was already over halfway through, with less than 100 pages to go, something I Never do. I just kept thinking it'd get better, then I came on Goodreads to see numerous people had finished the book with similar hopes that were eventually dashed, and decided I'd sidestep the waste of my time. WHAT HAPPENED?!! I wanna know what happened at the end of the summer. Darn you Larry Doyle! This book was fun. More laughs, more good story. I want to know what happens next!
Sometimes there's nothing better when that used book sale purchase - admittedly one I did not give much thought to at the time - turns out to be a diamond in the rough. You know - low cost / low expectation, right? I Love You, Beth Cooper is like a print version of an exceptional 80's or 90's teen comedy movie (the ones that had just the right balance of humor and heart in the mix).

I have no doubt that Larry Doyle can be a humorous writer (how else could he have credits in Beavis and Butthead and The Simpsons?), but he has no business writing a novel and should have stuck to writing for the screen.
Maybe saying 'no business' is too harsh. Let me rephrase: he should have honed his novel-writing first and not just ported his script to the novel format, bugs and all.

I finished this book in three hours. From page one, Larry Doyle creates an eerily familiar depiction of high school, specifically that moment when you look back during your graduation and realize you're finally free and have your whole life ahead of you--and it's scary.

On the day of his high school graduation, debate captain Denis Cooverman makes his valedictorian speech. He stands up in front of the podium, and it starts off typical and boring enough. Until he says the following five words: 'I love you, Beth Cooper.' This declaration of love for the head cheerleader - as well as a few other choice statements - stuns the crowd, and sets into motion a series of events that turns Graduation Night into the craziest, most dangerous, and exhilirating night of Denis...more

I don't know. I was a dorko too, I went to high school in America, and I wanted to like this book. Some people with good taste had recommended it to me -- and they weren't wrong. This book is incredibly funny. I guess my problem enjoying it was that that's just all there is. It feels exactly like a book written by a writer for the Simpsons. And I'm not trying to put down the Simpsons here either, but, the show did lose a lot of it's depth as it went on.

The beginning of this book has some of the funniest writing I have seen in a very long time. Although, as I noted to my friend, Amy, some of the humor might be lost on someone who was never an adolescent boy.
The middle does kind of drag on a bit, as the 'main character constantly getting the crap kicked out of him' theme gets a bit overplayed. But it does end nicely.

I Love You, Beth Cooper is the literary equivalent of watching a John Hughes movie or a classic John Cusack as a teenager-in-love movie (think Say Anything). It is not entirely my fault that I read a book as stupid as this one. I knew going in that it wasn't exactly going to be Ulysses, but given that it was so popular for more than a couple of years, when it turned out to be the book version of every raunchy teenage sex comedy ever, I was surprised. I mean, try to imagine the movie Porky's, but as a book. Seems unlikely, right? That's what I thought too, but sadly I was wrong.

Plot[edit]
On graduation day at Buffalo Glenn High School in Tacoma, Washington, valedictorian Denis Cooverman confesses his love for head cheerleader and long time crush, Beth Cooper in his speech while also taunting Valli Wooley, a girl with an eating disorder, and an ignorant bully, Beth's Army soldier boyfriend Kevin; and urging his best friend Rich Munsch to 'come out of the closet' and finally admit he's gay. Afterwards, Denis invites Beth and her friends, Cammy and Treece, to a party he has planned at his house.
At Denis's house, his parents leave but not before his father revealing that he has condoms upstairs if he needs them. Beth, Cammy, and Treece arrive at Denis’s house for the party. Kevin and his Hummer soon come barging in, with his Army buddies vowing revenge on Denis. They attempt to beat Denis up, but it results in Denis, Beth, Rich, Cammy, and Treece escaping in Beth's car.
They drive to a gas station hoping to get beer, but are told by the convenience store clerk that he will not accept the driver’s license Beth gave him which states that she is 37. So Beth bribes the clerk with a kiss. He accepts, which makes Denis realize that she is not who he thinks she is. They then start a bonfire in an isolated section of town where Rich, Cammy, and Treece are chased by a stampede of cows after trying to tip one over. Denis then puts on the song 'Beth' by KISS and is told that she was named after that very song. Denis thinks it's cool that Beth has two 'headbangers' for parents. In Beth's eyes one can see she's slowly warming to Denis, and is becoming aware that he truly does genuinely love her, much to her amazement.
They all get in crazy reckless driver Beth’s Echo and drive without lights. They then stumble upon Denis's father and mother (who are both having car sex) by almost crashing into them. Rather than facing Denis’s father with his pants down, Beth decides to drive them away unseen to a private party at Valli Wooley’s house, encountering Kevin once again who had tracked them there. Kevin challenges Denis to a fight, as a now fed-up Beth crashes his car through the wall of the house. They drive away in Kevin’s Hummer H2 to the vacant Buffalo Glenn High School, parking halfway up the front flight of stairs, and enter the school with Beth’s head cheerleader key. After showcasing their cheerleading routine, Beth, Treece, and Cammy decide to run to the girls' locker room to take a shower. Just as Denis is undressing to join his friend and the girls in the shower, Kevin and his buddies appear in the locker room and jump him once again. Rich challenges Kevin and his friends in a towel whipping 'duel', as he has been training for years after being towel whipped as a bullied young kid. Rich finally manages to defeat the three guys, towel-whipping them unconscious down a flight of stairs. They escape to Treece's father's cabin in Beth's Echo where Rich, Treece, and Cammy have a threesome, as Beth and Denis enjoy the sun rise and finally share their first kiss.
They head to Denis's house afterwards where his parents are delighted to see he has 'hooked up', but make him aware he still needs to be punished for leaving the house in a wreck. Beth says goodbye to Denis, gives him a kiss, and touchingly thanks him for loving her. Denis tells her 'what's not to love' and that she mustn't forget that. Then promises that he will see her at their high school reunion and if they are both still single that he will marry her. Beth smiles and tells him it's a deal. After Beth leaves with Treece and Cammy, Rich proclaims to Denis that he might be gay after all, or perhaps bisexual (plus jokes that after last night's antics he's still more heterosexual than Denis). Denis informs Rich that he was just playing about waiting until the reunion to talk to Beth again. He tells Rich that he is going to leave Beth a message on Facebook and ask her out. Rich disagrees with him and tells Denis that he should make a grand gesture by going to her house with a boom box and wait for her. They then begin debating on how Denis should go about asking Beth on a date.

Production[edit]
In early 2008, producers announced the novel I Love You, Beth Cooper would be made into a film, with actress Hayden Panettiere in the title role.[2] Filming began in 2008, with a release slated for July 10, 2009. The film was directed by Chris Columbus, with the screenplay written by Doyle.
Filming took place at Centennial Secondary School, Magee Secondary School and at St. Patrick's Regional Secondary; which are all located in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The film's official website was launched on February 14, 2009 with a Valentine's Day themed 'personalize your own trailer and e-card' widget that allowed for customization of the trailer and that could be sent to loved ones, friends and family.[3][dead link]
The film was produced and originally to be released by Fox specialty subsidiary Fox Atomic, but theatrical distribution reverted to 20th Century Fox after Atomic folded in April 2009.[4]

Critical response[edit]
The film received negative reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes the film has an approval rating of 13% based on 119 professional reviews. The site's consensus states: 'Heavily reliant on stereotypes and shallow teen comedy clichés, I Love You Beth Cooper is a humorless affair that fails to capture the charm of its source novel.'[7] On Metacritic the film has a score of 32% based on reviews from 30 critics, indicating generally unfavorable reviews.[8] Audiences surveyed by CinemaScore gave the film a grade B- on scale of A to F.[9]
Ben Lyons from At the Movies called the film 'The Worst Film of 2009 So Far', criticizing it for its stereotypical portrayal of high school students and glorification of drinking and driving.[citation needed]Peter Martin of Cinematical stated that much of the dialogue was lifted directly from the book, but when spoken on screen, the lines fall flat. 'The adaptation from R-rated novel to PG-13 film comes into play.' In a scene where Beth and Denis try to buy beer, Beth offers to kiss the store clerk so that she can buy the beer but the viewer does not see the kiss. Martin calls Panettiere's performance unconvincing as a 'rule-breaking girl who walks on the wild side'.[10]
Peter Travers of Rolling Stone magazine was critical of director Chris Columbus. Travers felt that Columbus flattened every joke and sucked the life out of the actors, and felt that Columbus' flair for sight gags reached its peak when Denis uses two tampons to stem a nosebleed.[11]Brian Lowry of Variety magazine complains that the film 'Peaks early -- like, during the first three minutes -- and rapidly goes downhill from there' and 'if only Columbus had found a way to relate Doyle’s story with greater style, and in less than 102 laborious minutes.'[12]
Roger Ebert gave the film 2/4 stars, and criticizes the film for being just another derivative teen rom com, although he expresses optimism about the next films from Panettiere and Rust.[13] Lisa Schwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly gives the film a B+ grade and calls it a 'pleasantly low-key teen comedy' and concludes that the story is essentially timesless.[14]
